By Pramod Madhav: Two men died on Sunday allegedly after consuming liquor they bought from a state government-run bar in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur.
Kuppusamy (68), a fish seller from Kizhavasal and Vivek (38) from Pumanravathan Koyil Street, brought liquors from the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation Limited (TASMAC).
After consuming the liquor, Kuppusamy returned to his shop, where he collapsed. According to one of the bystanders, the foam was oozing out of the victim’s mouth. Kuppusamy was rushed to a government hospital in Thanjavur, where he was declared dead.
The other victim also collapsed after leaving the bar and was declared dead at a hospital.
The officials who reached the spot to collect the sample to ascertain if the liquor had poisonous content had to face the anger of the protestors.
Holding officials responsible for the incident, the agitating crowd attempted to lock them inside the bar. However, the police intervened to rescue the officials and quelled the public rage. The cops assured action against the accused. Further probe into the matter is underway.
The incident comes barely a week after as many as 13 people have died and several hospitalised after consuming spurious liquor in two separate incidents in Tamil Nadu. Nine died in Marakkanam of Villupuram district while four were killed at Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu district after consuming illicit liquor.
