By India Today Web Desk: A man and his wife killed their three-and-a-half-month old daughter by throwing her into a canal in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district. It is suspected that the couple, who already had three children, killed the infant due to financial constraints.

The incident happened on Sunday evening when the couple threw the infant into the canal in the Chhatargarh police station area.

Eyewitnesses told police that around 5.30 pm, a couple came riding on a bike and threw the baby into the canal. The couple fled the spot after they shouted to stop them. Locals then tried to rescue the baby and took her out of the water, but she had died.

Following this, police were informed and a manhunt was launched to trace the couple. Police recovered the bike about 20km away from the spot.

The accused, Kanwarlal (35) and his wife Geeta Devi (33), are currently in police custody.

Bikaner’s Superintendent of Police Yogesh Yadav told Rajasthan Tak that based on the information received, the couple was nabbed in Diyatra village of Kolayat tehsil and handed over to Chattargarh Police for further action.

Yadav also said that apart from a three-and-a-half-month-old baby, the couple had three more children aged eight, ten and three years. It is suspected that they threw the baby into the canal due to financial constraints.
