Speaking to the Adheenam seers after he was handed over the ceremonial Sengol, the Prime Minister said that the sceptre will keep on reminding us that we have to walk on the “path of duty and remain answerable to the public.”
The Prime Minister said that the Sengol did not just become a symbol of power transfer in 1947, but also connected glorious India of pre-colonial times to its future.
Seeking the blessings of the seers, the Prime Minister said he is fortunate that they arrived at his residence today.
“It is the blessings of Lord Shiv due to which I am getting the opportunity for darshan of you Shiv bhakts,” he said.
The Prime Minister also took a dig at the Congress, claiming that the Sengol was not given its due respect after Independence.
“It would have been good if the holy Sengol with its rich history would have been given its due respect after independence and given an honourable position. But this Sengol was kept on display as a walking stick at Anand Bhawan in Prayagraj,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that your “sevak” (servant) and his government have now brought out the Sengol from Anand Bhawan. “We will relive that glorious moment of Independence when we install the Sengol in the new Parliament building,” he added.
The Prime Minister also lauded the role of Tamil Nadu in the freedom struggle of India.
“This state has given great leaders and has been a centre of the Indian nationalism. But it’s unfortunate that despite this all, the contributions of Tamilians were not fully recognised. It’s the BJP, now, which has started recognising and appreciating the contributions made by Tamilians,” he said.
Earlier, the Adheenams handed over the sacred sceptre to PM Modi on the eve of the inauguration of the new Parliament building.
The Adheenams also presented a special gift to PM Modi.
At the inauguration of the new Parliament building on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will establish the historical and sacred “Sengol” in the Parliament House.
Earlier, home minister Amit Shah said on Wednesday that the sacred sceptre ‘Sengol’ is the symbol of the transfer of power from the British to India.
He said that the Parliament House is the most appropriate and sacred place to install the historic ‘Sengol’.
The Thiruvavaduthurai Aadheenam had said that it is a “matter of pride” for Tamil Nadu that Sengol, a symbol of justice, will be installed in the new Parliament building.
