By Sagay Raj: Doctors at HSK Hospital in Karnataka’s Bagalkote removed 187 coins from the stomach of a 58-year-old man. The man, identified as Dyamappa Harijan, was suffering from Schizophrenia and doctors discovered that he had swallowed the coins through an endoscopy.
Doctors found out that Dyamappa had swallowed coins by getting an X-ray. To reconfirm, doctors did an endoscopy. Doctors had to perform gastrotomy surgery and remove the coins.
They discovered that he had swallowed coins weighing 1.2kg in total. Talking to the media, Eshwar Kalburgi, one of the surgeons said, “It was a challenging case. His stomach had become like a balloon and there were coins everywhere in his stomach. There were coins of one rupee, two rupees and five rupees.”
He had swallowed 56 five-rupee coins, 51 two-rupee coins and 80 one-rupee coins. His family was also unaware of Dyamappa swallowing coins. He had complained of stomach ache and vomiting. They got to know after they took him to the hospital.
Ravikumar, Dyamappa’s son, said, “We weren’t aware of this. He was not mentally well but did his routine work every day. He didn’t tell anyone that he had swallowed the coins. Just a few days back, he had a bloated stomach, and when he was asleep he was in agony. But he never thought he had swallowed coins. We got to know after the scan.”
