SHIMLA: The Congress campaign committee chairman Sukhvinder Sukhu has taken a lead in the race for the new chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, reports suggest. He has the highest number of MLAs with him and on this basis the high command will take a decision.
The buzz is that the new government may have two deputy chief ministers to maintain the balance among the warring factions within the party.
To settle the issue, the central observers would convene the meeting of Congress Legislature Party in the assembly complex at around 5pm on Saturday wherein the final decision would be taken. To balance the equations, Mukesh Agnihotri and Vikramaditya Singh can be made deputy chief ministers.
After the meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) on Friday night, the round of meetings continued since morning at Hotel Cecil at Chaura Maidan where senior leaders including state president Pratibha Singh, leader of opposition Mukesh Agnihotri, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and several other MLAs met central observers including Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and AICC incharge for state Rajeev Shukla.
During the one to one interaction with the central observers, majority MLAs have supported Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu as new chief minister. Sources said that in the afternoon, Sukhvinder Sukhu and Mukesh Agnihotri were called to the hotel where central observers are staying. A virtual meeting of them was held with some central leaders in Delhi.
After this, almost a consensus seems to be forming regarding the new government.
A meeting of the CLP has been called at 5 pm. In this meeting, the new Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers in the new government can be announced on Saturday itself.
