AAP alleges BJP targeting Delhi slums, water cannons used amid protests

Water cannons were used on Saturday to disperse off protesters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) amid stir against the BJP. AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar shared a video, which showed a huge crowd of demonstrators shouting slogans as cops stood guard amid barricading. The stir was held to protest action against slums. AAP leader Atishi, MLA Somnath Bharti and MCD mayoral candidate Shelley Oberoi were among those who took part in the demonstration.

On Twitter, the AAP said that BJP’s DDA (Delhi Development Authority) was in the process of demolishing some slums. Referring to the crucial elections of the Municipal Commission of Delhi (MCD), AAP’s Atishi was heard attacking the party ruling at the centre in a video: “They were making opposite claims before the polls. Now that the polls are over, notices have been sent to slum dwellers about the demolition. Kalkaji, Tughlakabad, and other places are witnessing such demolitions. We won’t let this happen Our struggle will continue from sadak (roads) to Sansad (Parliament)”.

The AAP last month ended the BJP’s 15-year long reign in the Delhi civic elections. Before the polls, three Delhi civic bodies were merged into one Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). Landfill sites, issue of slums, air pollution were among the issues on which the two parties sparred.

“Our slogan is to protest the atrocities. We are the soldiers of Arvind Kejriwal. We won’t let the slums get targeted by the BJP,” MLA Kuldeep Kumar wrote in a tweet on Saturday, loosely translated from Hindi. In a video shared by the Delhi unit of AAP, he is heard saying: “The BJP had promised ‘Jahan jhuggi, wahin makaan (Where there is slum, there would be house)’. Now they are hell-bent on knocking down these slums. We won’t let them do this.”
