A group of people acting as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigators stormed a businessman’s residence in Kolkata’s Bhowanipore area and allegedly looted Rs 30 lakh and jewellery, news agency PTI reported citing some police sources.
Suresh Wadhwa, 60, filed a complaint at Bhowanipore police station when a gang of 7-8 men acting as CBI officers barged into his apartment on Rupchand Mukherjee lane at around 8 am on Monday and began what they claimed was a “raid”.
“The men arrived in three vehicles having police stickers pasted on them. I opened the door and they barged in telling me that they are CBI officers. I had asked them to show their identity cards, but they did not bother,” Wadhwa was quoted as saying by PTI.
The businessman stated that the men left with Rs 30 lakh in cash and jewellery worth several lakhs, and that the “seizure list” will be sent to him later.
“They had prepared a seizure list at my residence but said they would send it later. They even informed me that I will be summoned to their office later,” Wadha stated.
After the businessman filed a complaint, Kolkata Police launched an investigation.
A senior police officer revealed that detectives from Kolkata Police’s detective section, together with colleagues from Bhowanipore Police Station, have begun an investigation into the “crime”.
According to the preliminary inquiry, the men who participated in the “operation” at Wadhwa’s house were tall and well-built, and they were carrying “lathis.”
Detectives believe insiders or people close to the Wadhwa family are involved in the crime, according to the officer.
“We are talking to the servants at Wadhwa residence and others who are employed with their farm. These culprits had details of the Wadhwa household, where the cash and jewellery were kept,” the police officer said, PTI reported.
“We’re gathering CCTV footage from the area to identify the three vehicles used in the crime,” the officer stated.
