Bengaluru Road Caves In During Metro Work, Biker Sustains Injuries

New Delhi: A person was injured after a portion of a road on the busy stretch from MG Road to Shule Circle in Bengaluru caved in creating a five-metre ditch on Thursday, news agency PTI reported.

The ditch appeared as a biker stumbled on it and sustained minor injuries.

“Right after that, the road caved in before the eyes of everyone and the five-metre-deep ditch appeared. Soon, the road was closed for public movement,” an officer posted in Ashok Nagar traffic police station told PTI.

“A major accident has been averted due to the timely action by personnel of our police station. They blocked the road and quickly diverted the traffic,” the officer added.

According to the official, the road caved in due to a leakage in a water pipeline.

It is to be noted that the incident took place near an area where the tunnel boring work for metro construction is taking place.

The phase 2 of the Metro construction project, which is called the red line – from Nagawara to Gottigere, is currently underway. The portion of the road caved in where a tunnel was bored 150 MTS away from the accident spot.

Notably, the incident took place just two days after a woman and her minor son were killed after a pillar collapsed on them in Nagavara area on Tuesday, triggering massive outrage against the Namma metro project and the Karnataka government.

The deceased woman’s husband and daughter also suffered injuries but are reportedly out of danger.

“Both suffered head injuries, we tried our best to save them. There was a lot of blood loss already and also a fall in blood pressure,” the doctors who treated them said.

According to reports, Namma Metro and the Karnataka government have announced a compensation of ₹ 20 lakh each to the affected family.
