NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday unfurled the national flag at Lal Chowk in Srinagar as part of the ongoing ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra‘, amid high security measures.
Rahul took a 30-minute break from the Kanyakumari to Kashmir foot march at Sonawar to visit the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters on Maulana Azad Road before heading to the clock tower, also known as ‘Ghanta Ghar‘.

He was joined by his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and local party leaders.
All India Congress Committee general secretary, in-charge communications, Jairam Ramesh on Twitter said the flag unfurling was planned for Monday but had to be done a day earlier.

“@RahulGandhi was supposed to unfurl national flag on Jan 30th in PCC office, since permission to do so elsewhere wasn’t given. Last evening, state administration allowed him to do so in Lal Chowk, but under condition that it should be done today on 29th at end of #BharatJodoYatra,” Ramesh tweeted.
During the event, barricades were set up and concertina wires installed at all entry points with heavy deployment of security personnel. Shops, business establishments and the weekly flea market were also closed as part of the security exercise for the flag unfurling event.
The Congress march was cancelled on Friday in Anantnag district after the party alleged security lapse, saying police arrangements by the J&K administration ‘completely collapsed”. The Bharat Jodo Yatra resumed in Pulwama district’s Awantipora on Saturday wherein Rahul was joined by Priyanka, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti and her daughter Iltija Mufti.
