By Geeta Mohan: An MLA from Arunachal Pradesh’s Pasighat (west), Ninong Ering, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking a ban on Chinese Closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems at government offices in India. He mentioned that the CCTVs could be used as the ‘eyes and ears of Beijing’.

The MLA took to Twitter, writing, “Wrote a letter to Hon’ble PM Sh Narendra Modi Ji to ban installation of Chinese CCTV systems in Indian Govt offices. These installed CCTVs in use across India can be used as “eyes and ears of Beijing #CCPChina”.

Citing global media reports, Ering explained the looming threat from China and said several countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, had recognized the dangers from China.

The Congress leader referred to his earlier letter about how Huawei was founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former engineer in the Chinese Army, and said, “Under uniquely opaque Chinese law and governance in practice, Huawei very likely will not be in a position to refuse the Chinese agencies against any demands for cooperation to collect information on India. The Chinese law makes it mandatory for Chinese firms to help in intelligence gathering.”

The politician also cited events where China showed hostility towards India and said, “In the present state of affairs, when China has repeatedly shown hostility not just to our LACs but also by attacking India’s IT infrastructure, it is evident that India must take decisive action to curb this looming Chinese threat. Hence, I will request that you immediately direct a ban on the installation of Chinese CCTV systems in Indian government offices.”

He also suggested that the ban on Chinese CCTVs could be followed by a launch of a public awareness campaign, educating people against using Chinese CCTV in their homes.

“The government should also consider the launch of a Swadeshi cloud-based server solution to safely keep the CCTV data wherever it is required. Given India’s prowess in the IT sector, we are well capable of dealing with this danger to our national security,” he said.
