Congress: Delhi Police’s action govt bid to shift focus from Adani row: Congress | India News –

NEW DELHI: With Delhi Police visiting him twice in three days seeking details of his comments during the Bharat Jodo Yatra about women facing sexual violence, Congress member Rahul Gandhi termed the action “unprecedented” and asked the cops if their new-found urgency was related to the stand he has taken on Adani issue, even as Congress condemned the action as vendetta aimed at terrorising the leader.
The party also dubbed the police questionnaire as “illegal”, suggesting the point will be made in the final reply to the cops.
Congress, led by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and legal eagle Abhishek Singhvi, led the attack on the BJP government, underlining the “new-found hyper activity” by police 45 days after Rahul made the speech in Srinagar. They also called it a strategy to divert news headlines from Adani issue. Gehlot alleged the cops were acting on the direction and pressure of Union home minister Amit Shah.
Kharge tweeted: “The Modi government has gone berserk in the effort to save Modi’s ‘best friend’. After 45 days, sending Delhi Police to Rahul’s house for questioning regarding ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is yet another cowardly act of dictatorial government. Run the parliament, constitute the JPC, bring out the truth.”
Gehlot said similar action was taken during the Janata Party governance in Indira Gandhi’s time, and people gave a befitting response to the government. He said the “anarchy” of police, ED, CBI and I-T department action is unprecedented, and there is pressure on all institutions, including judiciary, “irrespective of what CJI says”. He said BJP was setting a wrong precedent by registering cases on the basis of statements of opposition leaders made during political campaigns. He asked if Rajasthan police should lodge a case and ask questions if a Union minister goes on a campaign in the state and talks about some harassment or rape and injustice.
Singhvi said, “Why has Delhi Police woken up after 45 days. They agreed for a time of 10 days, and then suddenly land at Rahul’s house in two days. This hyper-urgency after 45 days. Is it related to Rahul’s speeches in Parliament or the inconvenient questions he asks?” The Congress members said the yatra covered 4,000 kms over four months and passed through 12 states, and during such yatras, lakhs of people meet political leaders and air their grievances.
