Congress leader Navjot Sidhu to remain in jail despite remission rumours

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu will remain in jail despite speculation that the Punjab government will give special remission to the former minister on Republic Day.

By Kamaljit Kaur Sandhu: Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is serving a one-year jail term in the Patiala central prison in a 1988 road rage case, will not be granted special remission on Republic Day and will remain in jail, sources said.

There was speculation that Navjot Sidhu could be among the 50 prisoners who might be given a special remission or early release on Friday.

The supporters of the jailed Congress leader had made preparations to welcome the former cricketer in Patiala but there was no official word from the Punjab government on his premature release on Thursday.

A route map to welcome the Congress leader was also posted on Navjot Sidhu’s official Facebook page by his team on Wednesday evening. It urged the supporters of Sidhu to gather at the designated places, including the Patiala central jail and at the former Punjab minister’s residence.

Navjot Sidhu’s media advisor Surinder Dalla had tweeted on Tuesday: “The protector of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat Navjot Singh Sidhu is coming soon.”

The former Punjab Congress chief was sent to jail on May 20 last year after he surrendered before a Patiala court after being sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a year by the Supreme Court in the 1988 road rage case.
