Congress-Left front delegation probing Tripura post-poll violence attacked by ‘BJP goons’

Congress and the CPI(M) have alleged that BJP workers pelted stones at their teams’ vehicles. Although all leaders returned from the place unhurt, two vehicles were severely damaged by the miscreants who resorted to stone pelting.

By India Today News Desk: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) and Congress on Friday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attacking a delegation of the Opposition, who are visiting post-poll affected areas in Tripura. Congress said that a fact-finding team comprising its leaders was “attacked” by BJP workers in Bishalgarh and Mohanpur.

Congress and the CPIM said that BJP workers pelted stones on their teams’ vehicles. Although all leaders returned from the place unhurt, two vehicles were severely damaged by the miscreants who resorted to stone pelting.

Taking to Twitter, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh alleged, “A delegation of Congress leaders was attacked by BJP goons today in Bishalgarh & Mohanpur in Tripura. Police accompanying the delegation did NOTHING. And tomorrow BJP is having a victory rally there. Victory of party-sponsored violence.”

Meanwhile, the CPIM stated, “A Delegation of CPI(M), CPI and Congress MPs which is visiting violence hit areas of Tripura was attacked today in Bishalgarh by BJP goons. Even lawmaker are not safe in Tripura. We strongly condemn it..”

CPIM MP Elamaram Kareem said, “BJP goons unleashed attack against the fact-finding team of opposition MPs visiting the post-poll violence affected areas of Tripura. It’s the Goonda Raaj of BJP ruling the state now. Law & order in the state collapsed completely. We won’t move an inch back from our visit.”

TRIPURA POST-POLL VIOLENCE

On March 10, three teams, comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs of Congress and CPIM arrived in Tripura to visit violence-affected areas. The CPIM state committee Secretary and MLA Jitendra Chaudhury, Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, and CPIM MP Elamaram Kareem were also present.

The attack was carried out at Nehal Chandra Nagar area in Sepahijala district in Tripura when MLA and PCC Chief Birajit Sinha, MP Abdul Khalique, and Congress working committee member and in charge of Tripura Dr. Ajoy Kumar went there to interact with the locals pertaining to the incidents of post-poll violence. Although all the leaders returned from the place unhurt, two vehicles were severely damaged by the miscreants who resorted to stone pelting.

PCC Chief Birajit Sinha alleged that more than 25 BJP workers suddenly came in front of them and prevented them from entering the market. “On March 9 around 19 shops in the market of NC Nagar were burnt to ashes by the BJP-backed miscreants. But when we arrived at the spot, the BJP workers rushed to the spot and started accusing us that Congress and CPIM workers have set the shops on fire. They told us that all the shops that were burnt down belonged to supporters of the BJP,” said Sinha.

The 60-member Tripura Assembly election was held on February 27 and the results were announced on March 2. Having won for the second consecutive term, the BJP-IPFT returned to power, wherein the saffron party bagged 32 seats while its alliance partner IPFT won one seat.
