Delhi colder than Dharamshala, Nainital as cold wave rips through national capital

Delhi recorded temperature comparatively colder than hill stations like Dharamshala and Nanital, witnessing cold wave-like conditions.

Delhi’s primary weather station in Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius.

By India Today Web Desk: The national capital experienced cold wave conditions on Tuesday as the temperature at several parts of Delhi dipped below 6 degrees Celsius, comparatively lesser than hill stations like Dharamshala and Nanital.

Delhi’s primary weather station in Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius, whereas Dharamshala and Nanital logged 6.2 and 7.2 degrees Celcius respectively.

According to weather experts, the deep drop in day temperatures could be attributed to north-westerly winds ripping through the plains prompting thick fog to cover the sunshine.

A day is considered cold when the minimum temperature is less than or equal to 10 degrees Celsius below normal and the maximum temperature is at least 4.5 degrees below normal. A severe cold day is when the maximum is 6.5 degrees or more below normal.

Mahesh Palawat, vice president (meteorology and climate change), Skymet Weather, said a western disturmmu’s visibility was at 50, Habance led to a fresh spell of snowfall in the mountains on December 25-26 and cold northwesterly winds are now sweeping through the plains after its retreat, reported news agency PTI.

DELHI TEMPERATURE

Jafarpur in southwest Delhi logged a minimum temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 11 degrees Celsius, 10 notches below normal.

Mungeshpur in northwest Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 5.3 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 11.4 degrees Celsius, against the season’s normal maximum temperature of 21.4 degrees Celsius.

The automatic weather stations at Ayanagar, Lodhi Road, Ridge, Najafgarh, Pitampura, and Mayur Vihar recorded a maximum temperature six to eight notches below normal.

TEMPERATURE IN KASHMIR

As the cold wave kept intensifying in northern India, the minimum temperature in Kashmir’s Srinagar dropped to -4 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, in other parts of the valley, the temperatures plummeted beyond -8 degrees Celsius.

PUNJAB AND HARYANA

Biting cold conditions and dense fog were reported in several parts of Punjab and Haryana, with Narnaul being the coldest in the region at 2.4 degrees Celsius.

In Haryana, Hisar recorded a piercing cold as the minimum temperature plunged to 2.5 degrees Celsius. Ambala recorded a low of 7.7 degrees Celsius, Karnal 6.8 degrees Celsius, Rohtak 6.6 degrees Celsius, Bhiwani 5.5 degrees Celsius, and Sirsa 5.2 degrees Celsius.

Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a minimum temperature of 7.4 degrees Celsius.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 6.5 degrees Celsius, Ludhiana 6 degrees Celsius, Pathankot 8.8 degrees Celsius, Bathinda 3.6 degrees Celsius, Faridkot 6 degrees Celsius, and Gurdaspur 4.5 degrees Celsius.
