Delhi hit & run: Girl on scooty was with friend who fled in fear, Shah asks top cop for probe |

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police‘s investigation has revealed that there were two girls on the scooty which allegedly collided with a grey Baleno car being driven by five drunk men in Kanjhawala area in the early hours of Sunday, sources said. The first girl sustained minor injuries and allegedly fled from the spot out of fear while the other girl fell in front of the car after the collision and was run over, said an official. He added that her legs got stuck in the axle after which she was dragged by the moving vehicle for 12km, meeting a horrible end.
Police traced the second girl on Monday evening and she has reportedly confirmed that it was an accident which led to the tragedy, sources said. Her statement will be officially recorded on Tuesday.
The cops have also confirmed their presence at a hotel where the two women had gone to celebrate a birthday party with some friends before the accident. These friends have also been questioned.
Meanwhile, even as a political slugfest broke out over the girl’s death, the Union home ministry on Monday asked police commissioner Sanjay Arora to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and submit a report. This happened after Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to Arora about the incident. The inquiry will be conducted by special commissioner Shalini Singh. LG V K Saxena has also reviewed the investigation.
Police have invoked stringent IPC Sections 304 (culpable homicide) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) against the five men, who have been arrested. A medical board constituted by the Delhi government has conducted an autopsy on the body in the backdrop of the massive protests over the issue on Monday.
The five men have been taken on police remand for three days for interrogation and recreation of the crime scene. The cops want to ascertain how the accused supposedly didn’t hear anything because of the loud music they were playing and are likely to use a dummy for this. Officials said that the car will be examined mechanically as well as forensically to verify the accuseds’ claims.
Police are waiting for the autopsy report to rule out any sexual assault on the victim.
Addressing a press conference, special CP (law & order) Sagar Preet Hooda said fresh charges could be added against the five accused arrested in connection with the case on the basis of the post-mortem report.
He said the victim’s family was being updated about the investigation and assured that police will gather all evidence to ensure that the accused get the most stringent punishment.
A video showing the condition of the woman’s body surfaced on social media on Monday. fuelling rumours that the victim had been sexually assaulted.
Police have stumbled upon at least 6-7 clear CCTV footages showing the movement of the car as well as the girls. The girl was spotted on the scooty at 1.52am in a footage, minutes before the accident. The cops denied rumours that the accused were in the company of the deceased girl before the incident, sources added.
Police probe has revealed that the accused were able to bypass two permanent police pickets as they were on the other carriageway. Since they were maintaining a steady speed of 40-50 kmph, they didn’t raise any suspicion. Also, they took a U-turn just before the picket on their carriageway. Deepak, a driver, was familiar with the routes and police presence and thus managed to drive around for 90 minutes.
Armed with these findings, police will submit a report to the Union home ministry by Tuesday evening. The Delhi LG held a meeting with the top cop on Monday morning and asked him to probe every angle and aspect of the case while ensuring the strictest punishment to the accused.
“At his meeting with the police chief, the LG also asked him to ascertain whether there was any lapse on part of police and directed that responsibility be fixed for any such lapse. The LG also asked the officers to explore if anyone in the victim’s family could be provided with a government job,” an official said.
“The case of the death of a girl on a road in Kanjhawala area of outer Delhi is extremely tragic. All five main accused have been arrested. At present, many of our teams are engaged in investigating the incident. Delhi Police is in constant touch with the family members of the deceased and is providing all assistance to them,” police chief Arora tweeted.
