By India Today News Desk: A doctor from Meghalaya’s Rongram Bazar village was allegedly attacked by an angry mob on Tuesday while he was extorting money from meat vendors and shopkeepers at the market.

The doctor, identified as Jimmy Carter Sangma, apparently arrived at the Rongram market and started demanding money from vegetable vendors who had set up stalls on a piece of land that the doctor claimed was his.

When the doctor, along with three others, reached the market to demand money, the vegetable sellers gave in. But, the meat vendors refused to pay him and this caused chaos.

The meat vendors, along with a few onlookers, challenged the doctor and his aides, following which Sangma allegedly pulled out a large knife and threatened to attack anyone who opposed him.

The crowd got furious over this, and they thrashed the doctor and his three accomplices. Meanwhile, more people joined the angry mob.

However, the three injured miscreants managed to escape the spot. The enraged crowd destroyed the doctor’s car by lifting it off the road. They further dumped the car in the Ganol river.

In the meantime, the police arrived at the spot and took the doctor to the Rongram police station. But, the furious crowd surrounded the police station and demanded that the doctor should surrender.

The doctor was then detained by the police and was taken to the hospital.
