ED attaches Rs 7.93 crore of TMC MLA in Bengal teacher recruitment scam

Properties worth Rs 7.93 crore of Trinamool Congress MLA Manik Bhattacharya have been attached by the ED in West Bengal primary teacher recruitment scam.

By Munish Chandra Pandey: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached properties worth Rs 7.93 crore of Trinamool Congress MLA Manik Bhattacharya in the West Bengal primary teachers recruitment scam. The attached properties are bank balance in 61 accounts and mutual funds belonging to Manik Bhattacharya.

Few of these attached bank accounts were kept in the name of Manik’s friends and relatives who were induced by him and his family members to open so that detection by law enforcement authorities could be avoided.

“One such account used for money laundering activities was found existing in the name of Satarupa Bhattacharya, wife of Manik Bhattacharya, and Mrityunjay Chatterjee who had passed away in 2016,” said the ED.

The ED had earlier arrested Manik Bhattacharya, MLA and the former president of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education in the teachers recruitment scam on October 10 due to his alleged active and direct involvement in the offence of money laundering and his continuous non-cooperation towards the investigation. Manik is still under judicial custody.

The ED has already seized cash amounting to a total of Rs 49.80 crore, gold and jewellery valued at more than Rs 5.08 crore and attached properties worth Rs 48.22 crore in this recruitment scam.

The total seizure and attachment after the latest attachment stands at Rs 111 crore in this case.
