‘Gumraah’ box office collection Day 1: Aditya Roy Kapur-Mrunal Thakur’s film opens to disappointing

Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur’s latest release, the crime thriller ‘Gumraah’, which released on April 7 failed to live up to the expectations as the film witnessed a poor opening. The muted numbers at the ticket counters also led to mixed reviews from critics as well. There was no major clash with other Bollywood films at the box office, still the film failed to rake in impressive numbers on the first day of release. For the unversed, ‘Gumraah’ is the official Hindi remake of the 2019 Tamil hit ‘Thadam’.
According to industry reports, Aditya’s film earned Rs 1.5 crore on Friday, as per early estimates. It reportedly had a mediocre 11.25% occupancy in the Hindi-speaking market. Although there were no major box office clash the film did face tough competition from the last week’s two big releases, Nani’s ‘Dasara’ and Ajay Devgn’s ‘Bholaa’, as both these films are still performing well at the box office. As per industry reports, on its ninth day, ‘Bholaa’ managed an estimated Rs 3 cr and Dasara saw an estimated business of Rs 2.25 cr. So, it’s clear the Day 1 collection of ‘Gumraah’ is a huge disappointment.

Incidentally, ‘Gumraah’ happens to be the third Hindi remake of a south Indian film this year. All these films underperformed in theatres. Earlier, Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Shehzada, the remake of Telugu film ‘Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo’, failed at the box office ending its run with a total of only Rs 32.20 cr. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Selfiee’, remake of Malayalam film ‘Driving License’, faced same scenario and earned Rs 16.85 cr during its disastrous theatrical run.
