Kerala HC asks Kochi Corporation to provide contract details on Brahmapuram plant waste management

Brahmapuram waste plant: The Kerala High Court on Monday asked the Kochi Municipal Corporation Secretary to place before it all the contracts given for collection, transportation, handling and treatment of waste at the Brahmapuram plant and details of payments to contractors in the past seven years.

By Shibimol KG: The Kerala High Court on Monday asked the Kochi Municipal Corporation Secretary to place before it all the contracts given for collection, transportation, handling and treatment of waste at the Brahmapuram plant and details of payments to contractors in the past seven years.

The Division Bench comprising Justice S.V. Bhatti and Justice Basant Balaji also directed Corporation Secretary to place before the court the chronology of the consideration of passing over the responsibility of managing the Brahmapuram waste plant to a 3rd party agency.

“The Secretary shall place before us the contract under which the free handover of responsibility is given to a 3rd party. The Secretary is directed to place before the court the payments made by the Kochi Municipal Corporation under the head of collection, transportation, handing over, treatment etc. for the past seven years to the contractors or the staff under any head.”

Meanwhile, Ernakulam district collector informed the court that 90 to 95 per cent of the fire at different places has been put out. The District Collector informed that there is improvement in air quality near the site, neighbourhood and in the city.

Kerala High Court also asked for the details of person, if any, who died, due to Brahmapuram smoke, hospital in which the death is recorded, residence, last visited area and suffering from any ailments.

A monitoring committee appointed by the High Court visited the waste plant on Saturday.

OPPOSITION BOYCOTTS KERALA ASSEMBLY

The Opposition boycotted the Kerala Assembly session on Monday over the fire at the Brahmapuram Waste Treatment Plant in Kochi.

The Opposition parties staged a protest by holding banners before boycotting the session. They alleged that the fire at the Brahmapuram waste plant was the biggest man-made disaster Kerala had ever seen. The Opposition also alleged that the government’s negligence was the cause of this tragedy.

They have sought a CBI enquiry into the matter.

An adjournment motion was moved by Opposition MLA TJ Vinod to discuss the health concerns caused by the fire that broke out at the plant on March 2.
