Kolkata Police beefs up security in city ahead of Hanuman Jayanti tomorrow

By Rajesh Saha: The Kolkata Police has beefed up security in the city ahead of Hanuman Jayanti on Thursday. This comes after incidents of violence in the state during Ram Navami in the Howrah and Hooghly districts.

Even as no such incidents were reported in Kolkata, the police want to ensure the city remains calm on Hanuman Jayanti as well.

At least a thousand personnel will be deployed on the streets of Kolkata on Hanuman Jayanti to maintain law and order.

According to police sources, around six processions are scheduled to be taken out in Kolkata and Hanuman puja will be performed at nearly 80 temples in the city.

According to the sources, each procession will be escorted by the police force.

Officers of the rank of the additional commissioner and deputy commissioner of Kolkata Police will be present at every procession. Body cameras will be attached to the uniforms of every police personnel on duty on the roads.

In addition, each procession will be video taped by the police. Barricades and guardrails will be put up if necessary to avoid any untoward situations in the city, the sources said.

Additional CCTVs will be installed at 50 places across the city for surveillance, they said.

One company of the central forces is scheduled to be deployed in Kolkata to avoid any kind of unpleasant situations, in line with the order of the Calcutta High Court.

Separate Hanuman Jayanti processions are scheduled in Howrah, Nimtala, Shambhunath Pandit Road and Brahmo Samaj Lane on Thursday, the sources said.

According to the guidelines issued by the Kolkata Police headquarters, a maximum of a hundred people will be allowed to participate in each procession.

There will be volunteers in all the processions and they will be given a special identity card by the local police station.

Processions are permitted only in the morning and the evening. At the same time, temples where Hanuman Jayanti puja will be held will be guarded by a police picket.

Deputy commissioners will conduct vigilance in their respective areas and to further ensure security, the motorcycle patrolling force of the Kolkata Police will make rounds of the city.

A quick response team, a heavy radio flying squad and police control room vans will be set up.

The Howrah and the Hooghly districts of Bengal witnessed massive violence during Ram Navami. Several government properties were destroyed by the miscreants. Police personnel and common people were also injured in the ensuing violence.
