On Ratan Tata’s 85th birthday, Tata Motors’ top milestones under his leadership – Times of India

Born on 28 December 1937, Sir Ratan Naval Tata GBE OMRI FREng is marking his 85th birthday today. Some say he is the real ‘Kohinoor’ of India and he surely is one of the few public figures with zero haters. Tata is an industrialist and former chairman of Tata Sons. He was also the chairman of the Tata Group from 1990 to 2012, serving also as interim chairman from October 2016 through February 2017. He continues to head its charitable trusts. In 2008, he received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, after receiving the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour in 2000.

1998: The Tata Indica, the conglomerate’s first passenger car, was launched this year. The car went on to become the No. 1 brand in its segment within two years.

2004: Tata Motors is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The company also acquires the heavy vehicles unit of Daewoo Motors in the same year.
2008: Tata Motors unveils the Nano, the country’s cheapest passenger car. It was initially pegged to retail at Rs 1 lakh, though the price tag stretched to about Rs 2 lakh before it was discontinued in 2018.
2008: Tata Motors acquires the Jaguar and Land Rover businesses from Ford, and forms a new company, Jaguar Land Rover.
