Rohit Shetty will never make THIS kind of film, says ‘I can never do that’ – Exclusive – Times of

Rohit Shetty is known for his comedies and ensemble films. He’s made the successful Golmaal franchise movies not to mention the Singham franchise that has expanded from Ajay Devgn’s machismo to Ranveer Singh’s charisma in Simmba to Akshay Kumar’s bravado in Soorayvanshi. In a recent interaction for his latest comedy Cirkus, ETimes asked the filmmaker about his least favourite film genre. And his answer was surprisingly candid and insightful. Check out the interview below:

In his characteristic no-nonsense manner, Rohit Shetty confessed, “I will never attempt a dark film. Those thrillers that are shot in darkness with two people in a single room. I can never do that. It’s not part of my system.” He also acknowledged that his audience doesn’t expect him to make dark films. He said, “That is not my audience either. I know what my audience expects from me and I am happy catering to them and service them.”

Elaborating further on how the serious and dark films don’t excite him, Rohit Shetty said, “Another reason I cannot make a dark film is because I don’t like those kinds of films. Whenever I think of shooting something like that, it just doesn’t make sense to me. Even when I have to shoot a scene with two actors in a single room, I don’t understand what will come out of it. I ask myself, ‘Main kyun kar raha hoon ye sab?’”

His trademark as a filmmaker is the larger-than-life canvas that is full of colour and high-octane stunts. He revealed, “Scenes, films and their canvas should be big. If there are 100 artistes on the set, I will say, call 1000. If there are 25 cars on set, I will say 150 cars leke aao.”

With Cirkus, his latest offering, Rohit Shetty has assembled another ensemble cast that includes Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Pooja Hegde, Varun Sharma, Sanjay Mishra, Johnny Lever and more comedic actors. The film features both Ranveer and Varun in double roles, too.
