By Ram Kinkar Singh: A purported video of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, Abhay Verma, assaulting a sanitation worker went viral on social media with the MCD registering a complaint with Delhi Police against “unidentified goons having close association” with the lawmaker.
Now, the BJP MLA has approached the Delhi Police and cops have filed an NCR (non-congnisable report). He alleged that two AAP MLAs held a press conference on the issue and maligned his image.
When an NCR report is filed, it means that police can not arrest the person and can not investigate the case without the order of a judicial magistrate.
In a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had on Thursday requested stringent action against the perpetrators since the matter involved “physical assault, threat, and public humiliation.” The civic body cited a video circulating on social media which purportedly showed a few men thrashing the MCD employee.

AAP leaders on Friday staged a protest at Laxmi Nagar against local BJP MLA Abhay Verma for allegedly assaulting a sanitation worker. Carrying posters, several party leaders and workers gathered outside Verma’s residence and raised slogans against him and the BJP. The protest was led by AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar, who alleged that Verma thrashed the sanitation worker as he belongs to the Dalit community.
“The BJP is a party of goons. In this party, the more hooliganism a leader indulges in, the higher the post he gets. The BJP is against Dalits and is venting its anger on sanitation workers because of its huge defeat in the MCD (polls) at the hands of the AAP. Such goons should be immediately expelled from the party,” Kuldeep Kumar charged.
Refuting the allegations, BJP MLA Abhay Verma said, “The AAP is baffled after losing three of the four wards in the Laxmi Nagar constituency in MCD polls. The AAP MLAs have given a distorted version of yesterday’s incident and maligned my image that I strongly condemn.” The BJP MLA said he would take legal action against the AAP.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission for Safai Karamcharis has taken suo moto cognizance of the matter. The commission has demanded a thorough investigation under preview of SC/ST Act.
