Film distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal is convinced that the rescheduling of Jawan’s release date will affect multiple releases slated for both before and after August 25. He says, “It will impact the release dates of other films. Other producers will have to find new release dates.” Trade analyst Atul Mohan agrees with Bansal’s assessment and adds, “The release date of Jawan has a significant impact on the entire calendar of film releases. The change in the scheduled date will cause a ripple effect and affect the movies slated for release in August. Going by the current news, if the release of Jawan is delayed by 2 months, it will impact all the films releasing in August and September.”
Raj Bansal also adds that a reschedule will not impact the prospects of Jawan’s performance though. Bansal explains, “Shah Rukh Khan’s last release Pathaan, was a massive hit at the Indian box office, so his next release will generate lots of excitement among the audience. No other film will be released within 2 to 3 weeks. Moreover Jawan is again an action thriller.” Atul Mohan also agrees that Jawan will benefit from the spillover excitement of Pathaan’s success. He explains, “The phenomenal success of Pathaan has multiplied the craze for SRK and Jawan is a pan-India film that has the potential to shatter many records. The trade is eagerly waiting for its release and hoping for a positive outcome.”
Raj Bansal points out that a lot of big films are slated to release between June and August. He reminds us, “There are quite a few films releasing between June and August – Animal, Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, Satyaprem Ki Katha, Gadar 2, Adipurush and Maidaan.” A popular film producer who has made many mid and small budget movies points out on condition of anonymity, “The big producers and their big films have the resources and money to reschedule release dates when a big event film like Jawan jumps dates. But there are also lots of small fry in the big ocean who are helpless. Many independent producers who hope to get a handful of shows in less-busy box office weeks will be left panicking and running helter-skelter during the latter part of August and early part of September, when Jawan’s release will make an impact on the box office. These small producers might not be able to reschedule their releases and might see their movies tank without a trace.”
Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi feels there’s a lot of uncertainty in the film trade circles right now. He feels the ongoing summer vacation season could have been an ideal time to have a big release. He explains, “Right now, there is a musical chairs sort of situation between multiple films. Most producers are staying agile and not kick-starting their promotional campaigns based on the fact that big ticket movies like Jawan are getting rescheduled. Everyone will make release strategies once the year’s release calendar is updated. So, right now, it’s a bit unfortunate that this summer season, which is considered to be very beneficial for the movies, is not seeing any tempo coming in. I truly hope that a reasonably big-ticket film or a significant consequence film is ready and finds its place on the June 2 slot that Jawan has vacated.”
Rathi points out that post-pandemic, there’s been a lot of uncertainty when it comes to the release strategy of films. He hopes that a lot more films get released in theatres every week so that market trends can be analysed. He says, “Only when lots of films are released in theatres every week, will producers and analysts truly understand audience trends. This period of tentative strategies and rescheduling is not conducive for the film industry.”
