Trying to weaken us but not afraid, says Kharge after Delhi cops visit Rahul Gandhi

Expressing his displeasure at the police action against Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called it an “attempt to weaken us”, but asserted that the party will continue to “stand strong”.

By India Today News Desk: A day after Delhi cops landed on Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s doorstep, party president Mallikarjun Kharge voiced strong protest against the police action.

A Delhi police team arrived at Rahul Gandhi’s residence on Sunday to inquire about his “women are still being sexually assaulted” statement made in Srinagar when he was undertaking the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Speaking to the media, Kharge issued a reminder to the Delhi Police: Bharat Jodo Yatra ended 46 days ago.”

“Now they’re asking about whom he [Rahul Gandhi] met there,” continued the Rajya Sabha MP. “Thousands of people met him and shared their problems. Now they (Delhi Police) are asking to identify them. They are trying to weaken us but we are not afraid. We will stand strong.”

Responding to a question on whether Rahul Gandhi will address the ongoing row over his remarks aborad on the state of Indian democracy in Parliament, Kharge said he has sought time to speak in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

“If they will give chance he (Rahul Gandhi) will speak. If we are not allowed to speak in democracy then how this will work,” the senior Congress leader added.

A furious Congress lashed out at the Delhi Police after cops visited Rahul Gandhi for the third time in five days and asked him to provide information on the women “victims” so that the police can take up their case.

The opposition party attacked the Centre, accusing it of harassment, intimidation and political vendetta, but the BJP rejected the charge and said the police was “only discharging its lawful duty”.

On his part, Rahul Gandhi said the police action “unprecedented” and questioned the process as well as the sudden urgency shown over his remarks made in Srinagar 45 days ago.

He also sought 8-10 days for a detailed response to the queries, reported PTI citing sources.
