By Abhishek Mishra: In what may bring relief to 16,000 employees of the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation, the empowered committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Department of Public Enterprises on Wednesday agreed to increase the dearness allowance of the employees by 11 per cent. Now, roadways employees will get 28 per cent of their basic salary as dearness allowance.
The hike in dearness allowance stands in effect from January 2023 and both employees and officers of the roadways utility will receive the increased dearness allowance of three months in their upcoming salaries.

Speaking to India Today, Girish Chandra Mishra, general secretary of the Roadways Employees Joint Council, said till now, employees were getting 17 per cent dearness allowance.
“A demand was made by the Council to give 38 per cent dearness allowance to the employees. The committee has approved the proposal to increase the dearness allowance by 11 per cent,” said Mishra.

The current increase will now help employees get a dearness allowance of Rs 8,000 from the Rs 2,500 that they were getting earlier.
Welcoming the move, UP Roadways Employees Union President Rakesh Singh said they met state transport minister Daya Shankar Singh with several demands, one of which was increasing the dearness allowance. “The union is happy that our demand to increase the dearness allowance has been met,” he said.
