Violence in Bengal’s Kaliaganj over alleged rape, murder of minor girl; cops drag victim’s body

By Anupam Mishra, Suryagni Roy: Clashes erupted in West Bengal’s Kaliganj on Saturday after a minor girl was allegedly raped and murdered. The incident took place on Friday in Uttar Dinajpur district and the body of the victim was found by locals.

According to police, the girl, who is a resident of Gangua village of the district, went missing on Thursday evening after she went for her tuition. Her family was not able to trace her entire night, despite extensive searches by relatives and villagers.

Agitated locals clashed with the police, following which heavy forces were deployed in the area. Locals also put up road blockades, burnt tyres and allegedly pelted stones at police.

In a video shared by BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya, some police officials can be seen dragging the body of the victim. He also said that the minor girl belonged to the Rajbongshi community.

“In this video, the body West Bengal Police is insensitively dragging is that of a minor rape and murder victim from the Rajbongshi community in Uttar Dinajpur’s Kaliaganj. Such haste is often seen when the purpose is to eliminate or dilute evidence and cover up the crime,” Malviya tweeted.

Body of the girl has been sent for post-mortem. Superintendent of Police, North Dinajpur, Sana Akhtar said that two people have been arrested in the matter so far. Akhtar said that a bottle, possibly filled with poison, was found near the dead body of the minor girl.

Police are investigating the matter and a medical board has been formed to analyse the cause of death. No injury marks were noticed on the victim’s body.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognizance of the incident and has asked West Bengal Police to intervene in the matter and ensure fair investigation.

The Commission has also sought that an FIR under relevant sections must be invoked if the allegations levelled are found to be true.
