By India Today News Desk: Ever since the Uttar Pradesh Police went to the Sabarmati central jail in Ahmedabad on Sunday to bring back gangster-turned politician Atiq Ahmed to Prayagraj, the mafia has hogged the limelight. Atiq Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party MP, has more than 100 criminal cases registered against him and has been lodged in jail since 2019.
Atiq Ahmed is the main accused in the murder case of BSP legislator Raju Pal, which took place in 2005. He is also accused of killing Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the murder.
Atiq Ahmed was shifted to Sabarmati jail following a Supreme Court order in 2019 after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault on a real estate businessman, Mohit Jaiswal, while in prison in UP.
The Uttar Pradesh Police took steps to bring mafia Atiq Ahmed back as he will be produced in front of the Prayagraj court on Wednesday in connection with a kidnapping case in which he is an accused.
He will be produced in a special court to face its verdict in the 2007 Umesh Pal kidnapping and criminal conspiracy case. All accused in the case, including Atiq Ahmed, will be produced in court.
The police team reached Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad city on Sunday morning and left the premises with Ahmed amid tight security around 6 pm.
After passing through different states, Ahmed’s cavalcade entered Uttar Pradesh on Monday morning and stopped at Jhansi police lines. The convoy is being followed by media teams, Ahmed’s sister and lawyers.

Earlier this month, Atiq Ahmed moved the Supreme Court for protection, claiming that he and his family had been falsely implicated in the Umesh Pal murder case in Prayagraj and he may be killed in a fake encounter by the UP Police.
The Uttar Pradesh police chose a road route that passes through Madhya Pradesh’s Shivpuri and Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi to bring back the gangster.
