By India Today Web Desk: BJP’s national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla on Friday hit out at the Congress and questioned what their relationship is with American billionaire George Soros. His statement came after Soros’s remarks on the Centre and industrialist Gautam Adani created a stir.
The BJP leader shared a tweet posted by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor in 2009 where he said he met George Soros and called him a “concerned world citizen”.
“Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata hai?” wrote Poonawalla in his tweet.
The BJP has been opposing Soros’ statement where he said the Adani crisis will “weaken” Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hold on the government. “Modi and business tycoon Adani are close allies; their fate is intertwined,” he claimed.

“This will significantly weaken Modi’s stranglehold on India’s federal government and open the door to push for much needed institutional reforms,” said Soros. “I may be naive, but I expect a democratic revival in India,” he added.
Shehzaad Poonawalla pointed out that the Vice-President of George Soros’ NGO Open Society Foundations, Salil Shetty, walked with Rahul Gandhi during the Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra. “But it is not about one person joining the yatra”, said the BJP leader.
He then pointed out that Praveen Chakravarty, the Chairman of the Congress party’s Data Analytics department, also shared George Soros’ statement about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and amplified it. Praveen Chakravarty had tweeted a quote by George Soros on Friday.
“Congress said it has no relation to Soros so will they take action against Praveen?”, asked Shehzad. “Has the Congress become a vector or special purpose vehicle for figures like George Soros in their hatred for Prime Minister Narendra Modi?,” he added.
The BJP has been alleging that Soros targeted not just PM Modi but also the Indian democratic system.
